India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze Following Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" range.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the capital recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above healthy levels.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that blankets the city as winter sets in.

However in recent months, the current city leadership approached the supreme court to request a modification of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Legal Verdict and Enforcement

Despite concerns of public health and environmental activists, judicial authorities approved the appeal, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during designated hours throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi registered air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during Diwali in at least three years.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also initiated a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from India following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the city have persisted as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the levels of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from farm burning in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing dangerous haze that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million residents living in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various research.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing 10,000 untimely fatalities annually in Delhi.
