In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
