A recent study reveals that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
