Prime Small Screen Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Movies This Coming Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's unflinching commentary examines the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics along with the dreaded aspects of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers a masterful performance as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star forced into starring in a workout series on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and horrifying process titled "The Substance". This creates a new version of herself named Sue, leading to an increasingly vampiric relationship between them. October 17th, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery stars the talented actress in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take some time off from covering global conflict to join a high-end voyage with a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her husband, as well as other affluent individuals. But after a mysterious woman falls into the sea overnight and the entire crew denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity take over. Available now, Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh tests his directorial skills through this nifty paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the filming device – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and the entity appears defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage embraces his unique fame in this self-referential adventure. He acts as a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who agrees to a lucrative offer to appear at a birthday party in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, evening, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a continuation. Located in the late 70s in Denver, several child abductions has rendered the children frightened. After Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he anticipates a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet Jessica Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

The current week's additional entry by the same director is a spy mystery as precise like the turtlenecks sported by Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to discover a traitor inside the organization out of five possibilities – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful mental battle of fact versus fiction develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
