Just as Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the night before, the home side swept United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they reinforced their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Losses for United

This result represented consecutive Women's Super League losses for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s capacity to juggle domestic and European soccer with a small team has been a widely debated issue since they secured entry to the UCL. Reviewing the fixture list, it always appeared this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Regrettably for the away side, they seemed weary throughout, the memorable win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to rotate the squad with a a few alterations. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought freshness, although the dropping of the in-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in contrast, have no similar workload concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his side from the first whistle. This was a show of the power from Manchester City whose potent forward line controlled and tore United open with a sublime first half performance that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

This left the home team completely dominant and saw the visitors all at sea. In advance of this encounter, United had let in just six in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the presence of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The early indicators came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Hemp was at the heart of everything in the beginning, exploiting the gap left by Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her passes were creating danger and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple sorties forwards, their direct style giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not test Yamashita. City, in the meantime, controlled possession, taunting their rivals and trying to draw them out of their structure.

Goals Galore

They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh header of the campaign.

They increased their cushion with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was able to drive through the midfield from defense, the play became spacious for City. The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before delivering a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third after a swift turnover in the ball saw Hemp given the space to drive a shot home from distance.

Final Period

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the upright, but the visitors were creatively abject and failed to record a one shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to overcome any opponent who finished above them in the prior term, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a favorable standing after nine games.
