The Secret for an Ideal Kip: Timing, Where & Duration?

Tune into a few self-improvement gurus, and it’s easy to think that dozing is a superpower: more than a band-aid after poor sleep, but a shortcut to a better memory, a brighter outlook and possibly quicker running times. Professional athletes do it regularly – and so are musicians, mixed martial artists and business leaders. However, if you lack a dedicated nap-room or employment that permits regular snoozing, is it *truly* sufficient advantages to a quick nap for it to be worth the kerfuffle? Can you find a reliable way to nod off promptly? And can you honestly promise you’ll wake up feeling refreshed, rather than worse?

Understanding The Reasons for Napping

“We can identify three primary motivations for taking a nap in the adult population,” explains a leading sleep science professor. “One is termed compensatory napping, essentially what happens after experiencing insufficient sleep overnight. The second is pre-emptive sleep, when you are pre-empting a sleep deficit ahead, for instance during on night shifts. The third is called “appetitive drive”, which basically comes down to the wish: you have a chance to nap during the day, and it feels nice to indulge.”

The initial step to undertake, therefore, is consider your reason for napping. “Daytime sleep can be genuinely useful when night sleeping gets interrupted for reasons beyond your control – such as, for caring for an infant, or you’re recovering after being ill or intense exercise,” says a sleep expert. “However, if you take a nap since your sleep at night is unstable or unreliable, that is frequently a signal your need for sleep is not at the level it should be. In those cases, daytime sleep can turn into a contributing factor, rather than the answer. Use napping as a short-term solution for short-term problems – the priority ought to remain a strong and predictable night’s sleep.”

The Optimal Nap Duration

This means that naps shouldn’t be long enough to interfere with your overnight rest, and preferably are not recommended after about 3pm (based on what time you sleep in the evening). What duration is wise? Guidelines are mixed. From a prominent study regarding daytime sleep, space agency scientists discovered that space travelers had a boost of up to 54% in attentiveness plus a 34% rise in performance following a nap of 26 minutes (in detail, this counted an initial six-minute nodding-off period). “I’d suggest setting an alarm for 20-30 minutes – many individuals fall asleep within 10 minutes,” explains a sleep coach. “There is plenty of advice around concerning the perfect length for sleeping, but that tends to make people feel more worried than anything else – and the most counterproductive thing you can possibly do when trying to nod off is worry about it.”

Should you decide to nap for a longer period, bypass the period between 45 and 60 minutes that promotes that sluggish feeling, that spaced-out feeling when you wake. “The science indicates it is preferable to take an extended nap lasting 60-90 minutes compared to a medium-length nap,” notes the professor. “45 minutes is sufficient to put you into slow-wave sleep making it more likely to feel sluggish when you get up – while if you nap for a bit longer to an hour or 90 minutes, you’re likely to be completing a full cycle and are likely to wake up feeling more alert. But if you're dozing for 90 minutes, it can influence how you sleep that night.”

Creating an Ideal Sleep Space

Regarding specific techniques, advice differs. Some experts recommend employing comparable habits you’d use to promote restful sleep: a silent space, a cozy bed and maximum darkness as you can manage. Others suggest that one could simply nap on the sofa in the existing light is present – to prevent that groggy feeling and to “protect” your bed as the environment your brain links with *real* sleep. “Sleep is notoriously difficult to command,” notes an expert. “Lacking any drowsiness, it is more challenging to get comfortable and essentially instruct yourself to fall asleep. There’s got to be a natural inclination present to start the process to begin with. For me, it's possible to snooze in broad daylight and naturally wake up without an alarm, however, what assists most folks is to look for an instance that they’re naturally slightly tired and just gently ease into sleep.”

It’s worth experimenting, and when you have few options – for example, if you’re trying to squeeze in 40 winks while traveling or in a soundproof office pod – it is perfectly fine to use some accessories. “Coaching elite athletes, I advise that they don’t get used to their own bed for naps, since they’re going to have|they will
